The Ugandan bead project “aber beads”*moves away from charitable aid & onto the concept of business enterprise for sustainable income & development supporting 3 unique groups of people.
- “Hearts of Hope” is a group of 14 women who have either AIDS & /or are from abusive families. They joined together in 2009 to raise finances & gain hope for a better future for their children.
- “Mama Africa Raising Children” was started by a woman who saw the needs of her friends around her: this group of 18 women also have AIDS. They are victims of rape by LRA soldiers. Consequently their children also have AIDS & they have lost their health & have no job alternatives. The first rule of the group is LOVE: “as you work, speak and act”.
- “A Like Beads” is run by 3 men who are sons of the founder of Mama Africa Raging Children & are funding their education. Their aim is to finish their education, be self sustainable & be an example to others.
How are the beads made?
The pages of recycled magazines are cut into triangles & then rolled into beads. They are coated with a non toxic, odourless varnish which gives them a water resistant & glossy finish as well as protecting them from fading. Create unique, social & ethical gorgeous jewels such as necklaces, earrings & bracelets.
Who does the project support?
The women are mostly displaced from the north & live in crowded, one-room shanties on the outskirts of Kampala. They have few economic opportunities. Fleeing civil war, they settled near the capital in hope of a brighter future. Instead, they have found unemployment, HIV/AIDS, hunger, & unaffordable housing.
