How to Make a Multi Strand Necklace or Bracelet

I really love wearing multi strands necklaces & bracelets. They are great when you want to achieve an extra wow factor.

Multi strands can be made either by:

• Stringing beads together. (use a flex wire & a crimp bead to secure)

 

• Linking beads together. (use eye pins & individually form loops to link the beads. Eye pins are pre cut lengths of metal with a loop or eye at one end & come in different lengths)

 

You can design the necklace with all strands joining at the clasp.

 
 

• Baroness Linked Scalloped Necklace (link strands to a filigree stamping)

 

• Button Bracelet (crimp strands to a multi 5 row bar)

 

Alternatively use a single strand at the back which becomes a mutil strand at the front using a space bar.

 

Here’s how you can achieve that look too:

 

• Use cones (bead caps) like the Chanel inspired  pearl & jet design.

 

• Use multi bar ends like the Massai collar necklace.

 

• Use filigree stampings like the Egyptian inspired project (front cover of Aust Beading)

When to use them?

 

End bars – use for multi stranded chandelier earrings, bracelets and chokers. Attach a clasp or ear part to the single looped end. You can also have a single strand of beads strung or linked at the single end then attach your clasp after the last bead like our featured project.

Spacer Bars – keeps multi strands untangled and flat. Insert them at regular intervals when beading.

Vintage Jewellery Masterclass

The beauty of vintage jewellery touches almost everyone. Some may have inherited, others may have 
bought or others may have made some antique jewellery.

 
Handcrafting your own jewellery has endless possibilities. You will never know what you will find from a chain in an op shop to a vintage glass choker at market or some components eg stones or filigrees from a bead store. Using a polymer base is a great way to build up a beautiful mosaic using such found pieces, your leftover chain & broken beads.

 

Learn to create such pieces with Raphael Mhashilkar in a weekend master class which is suitable for beginners. (as seen in SMH Style Nov 2010)

Create a Mosaic: Build on techniques from yesterday & create a collage using charms, broken china plate to create a unique piece of jewellery.
